Physical properties of minerals (Introduction)

A rock is defined as an aggregation of minerals.
A mineral is defined an inorganic solid with a fixed chemical composition and a definite physical structure. The various physical properties of minerals are discussed below:

  • Colour

  • Chemical Composition

  • Crystal Structure

  • Form

  • Lustre

  • Streak

  • Degree of transparency

  • Hardness

  • Specific gravity

  • Cleavage

  • Fracture

  • Special property

  • Diagnostic property
After a careful analysis of the above mentioned properties we can conclude the Name of the mineral

Uses Once the mineral has been identified, its uses are listed and its Occurrence is noted.
