Study of structural geology models

Model showing STRIKE & DIP
This wooden model shows dip & strike of the four stratums with inclination angle S52E. When the rock surface is assumed to be an oblique plane. Strike is the dissection of contour lines

Study of topographic maps

Definition
A topographic map is a detailed and accurate graphic representation of cultural and natural features on the ground. It is a two dimensional representation of three dimensional level surface.
It indicates lakes, roads, railway lines, villages, bench marks, etc.

Aim
Study of topographic map of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, parts of Medak, Nalgonda and Mahboobnagar

Material
Topographic map No. 56K with scale 1:2,50,000 is chosen for study of topographic features

Method
In the given map there are a few major and minor tanks such as Osman sagar, Hussain sagar, Himayat sagar that meet the drinking water requirements for the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
Hussain sagar is located in the center of the map. This area is very famous for tourists.
There are a few forests such as Narasapur, Ibrahimpatnam, Medipally, etc. Among them, Narasapur forest is the thickest forest that is home to a variety of flora and fauna.
The map indicates road and railway network from Hyderabad to various parts of the country.

Identification and description of physical properties of minerals

Physical properties of minerals (Introduction)

A rock is defined as an aggregation of minerals.
A mineral is defined an inorganic solid with a fixed chemical composition and a definite physical structure. The various physical properties of minerals are discussed below:

  • Colour

  • Chemical Composition

  • Crystal Structure

  • Form

  • Lustre

  • Streak

  • Degree of transparency

  • Hardness

  • Specific gravity

  • Cleavage

  • Fracture

  • Special property

  • Diagnostic property
After a careful analysis of the above mentioned properties we can conclude the Name of the mineral

Uses Once the mineral has been identified, its uses are listed and its Occurrence is noted.

Introduction

ENGINEERING GEOLOGY:
Engineering  geology is an applied branch of Earth science. It mainly involves the study of rocks, soil and underground water. According to International Association of Engineering Geology, "Engineering geology is the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of engineering and environmental problems which may arise as a result of the interaction between geology and the works and activities of man as well as to the prediction and of development of measures for prevention and remediation of geological hazards."

The mutual relationship between geology and civil engineering gave birth to the applied science of engineering geology. Engineering geology uses geological information to assist civil engineers in solving problems associated soil, foundations and associated problems.

Ex:
  • All major constructions like dams, bridges, tunnels, highways, railways and tall skyscrapers require the geology of the site to be properly evaluated with respect to the cost and safety under the expertise of a geologist
Engineering geology strives to achieve stability, safety and economy in constructing civil engineering structures
