Introduction

ENGINEERING GEOLOGY:
Engineering  geology is an applied branch of Earth science. It mainly involves the study of rocks, soil and underground water. According to International Association of Engineering Geology, "Engineering geology is the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of engineering and environmental problems which may arise as a result of the interaction between geology and the works and activities of man as well as to the prediction and of development of measures for prevention and remediation of geological hazards."

The mutual relationship between geology and civil engineering gave birth to the applied science of engineering geology. Engineering geology uses geological information to assist civil engineers in solving problems associated soil, foundations and associated problems.

Ex:
  • All major constructions like dams, bridges, tunnels, highways, railways and tall skyscrapers require the geology of the site to be properly evaluated with respect to the cost and safety under the expertise of a geologist
Engineering geology strives to achieve stability, safety and economy in constructing civil engineering structures
